What are training tools and why are they used?

Training tools are any apparatus or item that is used to help expedite or improve the level of training that is accomplished with your dog. Training tools can be used to create a reward or they can be used to create a correction. Training tools that are used for rewards are treats, tennis balls, praise, a tug rope, Frisbee, retrieve ring, squeeker toy, and clickers. Training tools that are used for correction are training collars like a flat collar, fur saver, prong collar, electronic or static correction collar (used only for advanced off leash training), drag lines, martingale collar, bark collars, invisible fence collars, and choke chains.

In order to teach your dog right from wrong, they need a signal that they can understand that the have either succeeded or failed in following the command or expectation that you have set for them. For this reason we often need training tools to offer reward or correction. Each dog has a unique temperament and therefore a different variety of training tools are used for each dog. Some dogs are very sensitive and all that is required to help them understand when they have not followed a direction is a quick tug on a flat collar. Other dogs need a more clear signal that they have not done what they have been asked and therefore require a prong collar. Some dogs get overexcited with treats and need a reward that is less stimulating to them, sometimes praise or even a clicker to mark the behavior is required to keep her focused. Often, as dogs make their way through the learning process, the type of tools that are needed can change.

When your dog is in advanced obedience, she is often trained with an e-collar. This allows her to take training to the next level - OFF LEASH. With e-collar training, your dog will be able to have the freedom she has always wanted and the control you have always wanted.

At your first office visit, a customized training program will be set up for your dog. We will determine the appropriate training tools and goals, set up a schedule, give you an estimate for the number of sessions it will and take and get started on the training.
